People in Northeastern Colorado are very aware of the importance of water. It is a resource that we depend on in so many ways. The Lower South Platte (LSP) Children’s Water Festival, an event to help children learn about this vital resource as well, was held on September 20, 2023 at the Logan County Fairgrounds in Sterling, Colorado. This was an excellent opportunity for local students to learn more about this precious resource.  The festival is open to area (Morgan, Washington, Logan and Sedgwick counties) schools’ 5th grade classes.  This year we have over 500 kids attend!  We loved having the opportunity to host some of the best kids around for a day of learning and fun.  We look forward to hosting again in 2024!

Programs at this year’s festival included

Water in the West, Animals Need Water Too, Saltwater vs. Freshwater, Highline’s High Voltage demonstration and electrical safety, Soil Profile Sand art, Flocc Model, Pass the Jug-water right policies, How Much Water Does it Take, NRCS demonstration, Mapping the State, Don’t be a Drip-Music and Water, Water tension, Leave it to Beavers, Fire Department, Water Relay, Trivia Relay, Colorado Groundwater Association demonstration, Lego Water Cycle demonstration, Edible Soil Profiles and Edible Aquifers.  They also started the day with a demonstration from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and their K-9’s.
